David Anderson and Son, grocers, wore charged at the Police Court yesterday with selling liquor in less quantities than two gallons. The liquor was ginger ale, which was found to contain 34.19 ner cent of alcohol. A fine of 20s and costs was imposed. Defendants said that they acted unwittingly. A LOVER’S REWARD. LYTTELTON, August 27.—John Bailey was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court for burglary, with intent to commit a crime. He had been pursuing a girl with unwelcome attentions for a considerable time, and on Wednesday morning attempted to break into her bedroom by the window. CRUELTY TO DUMB ANIMALSASHBURTON, August 27. Several cases of alleged cruelty to dumb annuals were beard by Mr V. 0. Day, S.M., today The police prosecuted in each ease, Mr W. If. Zouch, the Christchurch Inspector ior the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, being the chief witness, lines were inflicted in every case, save one, as folios Stephen Ryan, £5; Henry Vcstenstokc ,40s ; Alexander Knox Reddecliffe, 20s; and John McLauchlan, 40s, with costs against each defendant. Ihe charge against John Johnston, of working horses while they were suffering from sores was dismissed, it having been shown by him that he had no knowledge of the condition of the animals.
