HOKITIKA HARBOR BILL.
The Hon. Mr Holmes in moving the second reading of the Hokitika Harbour Amendment Hill in the Upper House, said It was lo allow the Hokitika Harbour Hoard to borrow a sum of money to improve the harbour. They had gone to the expense of getting the opinion of Mr Leslie Reynolds and Mr Maxwell, civil engineers,’ and they recommended that the Hoard should extend the north wall some 900 or 1000 feet into the sea. They bad had a. very good illustration last year that this opinion was good, although the. incident occurred after the opinion bad been given. There was a big fresh in the river which scoured out a great stream and left an embankment on the north side. That kept the channel good for five or six months, thereby fully justifying the engineer’s opinion as to the benefits to ho derived from this north wall. This loan was to be met by a rate on the Hokitika Borough of Id in the pound and on the surrounding portion of the Westland County of id hi the pound. It ihc Comity objected, then the Borough would have to make up the difference- hut ho had not the slightest doubt hut that both country ;ind town would agree to this proposal. The effect of this wall would be to enable vessels of light draught to enter the port and carry away the timber from that district. At the present time the whole of the timber had to travel to the port of Gvvmoulh to he shipped. The Bill was road the second time. A copy nt ( the measure has reached Mr R. Wild, Chairman of the Hokitika Harbour Improvement Committee, and bo expresses himself well satisfied at the form in which _ the Hill is being passed through the Upper House.
