[l'.y Telegraph—Press Association.] HETERODAXY. DUNEDIN, Oct 6.—At a meeting of die Dunedin Presbytery this morning [he Kev. Sutherland gave proof regarding his allegations of wire pulling by the members of the Presbytery in connection with the Kev. Gibson Smith's Christ of the Cross. Mr Sutherland refused to name the members charged with wire-pulling, and the Rev. A. Cameron characterised the Rev. Sutherland's action as the action iif a coward, and said ho was convicted of disgraceful cowardice. The Presbytery passed a resolution exonerating Mr Cameron from the Kev. Sutherland's implied charges. FIRE AT KUROW. OAM'ARU, Oct 6.—A large wooden hotel of 38 rooms known as the Kurow Hotel, at Kurow, was totally destroyed by fire at mid-day to-day. The fire is supposed to have started in one of the bedrooms upstairs and in half an hour the building was completely destroyed. Some of the furniture and stock in the lower storey was saved. The buildings near the hotel were in danger for sonic time from the flying sparks, and the slock from the stores and furniture from the houses were removed. The railway station was for a time in danger, but happily nothing but the hotel was destroyed. The building was owned by Mrs Dolargy, and insured for £9OO in the South British Office, while the furniture and stock of the licensee, Mr J. Cahill, was insured for the most part in the National for £6OO.
OREGON PINE IMPORTATION. AUCKLAND, Oct 6.—The steamer Indravelli, which arrived from Vancouver via Fiji to-day, has about three and a half million feet of lumber for distribution at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Timaru. The Auckland consignments amount to about 600,000 ft. CAUGHT IN A GAS ENGINE. NELSON, Oct 6.—A lad named King, employed in a local cycle works, was caught in the fly wheel of a gas engine this afternoon and suffered a fracture of both arms and collar bone, besides minor injuries. DEATH FROM HEART FAILURE. NELSON, Oct 6.—At the inquest on Mrs Catherine Dominie Osborn, found dead at the stairs of her residence last evening the evidence showed that deceased was subject to fainting fits, and death was the result, of heart failure probably caused by the shock of the fall, and' a verdict to this effect was returned. THE EIG RIVER MINE. REEFTON Oct 6.—Another New Big River dividend has been declared of 2s 6d, or equal to £3OOO. THE FATALITY AT NELSON. NELSON, Oct 6.—The woman is named Catherine D. Osborne who was found dead by her husband last evening at the foot of the stairs at her home in Harley Street. It is believed that the woman collapsed from heart disease when descending the stairs. An inquest is being held. ALLEGED IMMORAL LITERATURE CHRISTCHURCH, Oct 6. Mr. 11. W. Bishop S.M., gave judgment in the "immoral literature" cases by fining the salesmen 40s each, but he did not record convictions against the employers. He said the sooner the whole thing was buried and forgotten "the better. He could not bring himself to believe that prosecutions of this nature against men of such standing could possibly result in any real benefit. A warning would have been sufficient for all respectable booksellers and they should then have been spared the proceedings. SABBATH DESCRATION. NAPEIR. Oct 6.—At a meeting of the Hawke's Bay Presbytery to-day it was resolved "That this Presbytery deplores the widespread Sabbath desocra tion within its bounds and urges the people of the various congregations to use their isflurnce in the direction of Sabbath observance, and further recommends that the ministers preach on the Sabbath law on some suitable date."
