Mr J. McKenzie presided and in a neat speech eugolised Mr Smith's conduct of the business and his kindly feeling towards the firm's employees. On their behalf and as a token of the respect in which they bore him he asked Mr Smith to accept a silver "tea set, which had been subscribed among themselves and on which they proposed to put an appropriate inscription. The tea set is a very pretty one and is o| sterling value. Mr Smith in replying referred to Mr McKenzie.'s remarks saying that when the firm knew they had good men they preferred to keep them and every one of the employees enjoyed the confidence and good wishes of the members of the firm. He enlarged on the advantage of employing reliable, trustworthy and faithful workers as essential to the welfare of a business sitch as that of Griffen and Smith and hoped that the cordial relations that had so long existed between the firm and its employees would long continue to exist.
