DUNEDIN, March 27.—Samuel Woods, aged 32, a single man employed in the Mushatt Steel Foundry Co., had his brains knocked out by an emory stone breaking and splitting his skull open. A NELSON FIRE. NELSON, March 27.—Early this morning a six roomed house occupied by Mr L. Kingctt, of Brougham St., was burnt down. The family were absent at the time. The house, was insured for £2OO in the Sun Office, and was owned by Mr Henry, of Stratford. The furniture was insured in the Royal Office for £75. LIQUOR IN THE EXHIBITION. CHRISTCHURCH, March 27. Tonight the police raided the oyster saloon at the Exhibition and seized 107 bottles of stout and beer. Two plain clothes constables, .brought down . specially from the North Island, are understood to have purchased drink at the saloon two nights running. A summons is to be issued against the proprietor of the saloon for illegally selling liquor at the Exhibition.
RAILWAY APPEAL BOARD. DUNEDIN, March 27.—The sittings of the Railway Appeal Board concluded on Monday, when an appeal hy C. E. Best, formerly leading carpenter at Hillside Workshops, against his reduction to the position of carpenter, was heard. The Dewartment’s action in reducing the appellant was based on his, use of obscene and improper language when speaking of the foreman of his department. The use of the language was admitted, but it was oonUfided that it was done jocularly, and not with the object of disparaging the foreman in the eyes of the men. It was also contended that a. fine would have mot the case, and that the punishment inflicted was more severe than the circumstances warranted. Ihe Board reserved its decision.
undesirable immigrants. , CHRISTCHURCH, March 27—Shortly after three o’clock this afternoon a most cowardly assault is alleged to have been perpetrated by a man named Thornley on John Bridgman, financial agent. Bridgman was talking to Detective Bishop at the corner of Hereford and Colombo streets, when Thornley came up and insulted him. Bridgman retaliated with his fists; Thornley then knocked him down, hitting huh.a terrible blow on the face and cutting open 'his cheek. Thornley was arrested and taken to the police sta:ion. GOLF TOURNAMENT. CHRISTCHURCH, March 27.—The Exhibition Golf Tournament, promoted by the Christchurch Golf Club, opened this morning, the leading .scores being as follows ; Ladies’ Championship of Canterbury, two rounds of 18 holes each, for medal and play for Challenge Cup—First round: Miss Mort (Sydney) 97, Miss N. Campbell (Christchurch) 100, Miss Cra--1 croft Wilson (Christchurch) 106. Miss i K. Rattray (Otago) 106, Miss R. Sealy (Timaru) 107. Ladies’ Handicap Match, one round of 18 holes—Miss Mort (scr.) 97, Mrs Macdonald (18) 99, Miss Campbell (scr.) 100, Miss Cracroft. Wilson fscr.) 100. Ladies’ Bogey Handicap, over 18 holes —Miss Gould (2) 2 down. Alias J. Mill (6) 3 down. The tournament will he continued to-morrow, and the men’s events will commence on Saturday.
