SOUTH SEA ISLAND SERVICES. TONGA, SAMOA, FIJI, SYDNEY. From Auckland Monthly. The Waimarino correspondent of the Auckland Herald writes : —The Ngaruhoe volcano, which has been showing signs of increased activity during the past fort, night, has given some fine displays. Huge volumes of ashes and steam have been pouring out of the two craters at the summit, rising to a height of about 400 feet above the cone, and forming a beautiful sight. The eastern side of the crater has been blown away, and this has altered the shape of the summit. The large lake on the north-eastern side of Ruapehu .Mountain has also been more than usually active. Immense volumes of steam have been rising from the lake, and for two or three days the whole mountain was enveloped in steam. A fine view of it was had from Ohakune, and the sound, which is easily distinguishable from blastimr in connection with railway works, is still beard at irregular intervals, and evidently is the result of internal disturbance at Ngaruhoe. A peculiar feature of the working of the cropping conditions under the Government’s land policy was brought under the notice of the Minister of Lands during his visit to thd Feilding District. Tlv cropping regulations require that half the area of a section shall be put down in permanent pasture. One man went in for an orchard, and was very successful with fifteen acres laid down in fruit trees. He is anxious to extend the orchard by utilising other parts of the land for this purpose, but has received notice that he cannot do this, and that half of his pro’perty must he kept in permanent pasture. Instead of being able to take advantage of the better market offering for fruit, he is obliged asc it only as grazing land. The matter is engaging the attention of the Minister with a view to making an amendment in the law to moot such cases,,
