NATIONAL LEAGUE
MAJOR SMITH APPOINTED GENERAL ORGANISER. WELLINGTON Mar 26. [Press Association—CorißiciHT.] Major NoiTnan Smith has been appointed general organiser to tho National League of New Zealand. Major Smith, who takes up his duties immediately, was (assistant xccrotary to the Midland Railway Company, and was in tho service of that Company until its withdrawal from New Zealand, during which time he was rn enthusiast in volunteering. He then served as chief staff officer under Colonel Penton and General Babington. Major Smith was in South Africa during the war, and his services there were most highly spoken of by Major Carthew-Yorstoiih, commanding the New Zealand Hotchkiss Battery. On returning from Sou>h Africa Major Smith was sent by the New Zealand Government to Melbourne in charge of the New Zealand Contingent to meet 11. R. 11. the Luke of York. He was subsequently responsible for the arrangements for the groat military review held before tho Royal visitors at Christchurch. Major Smith is intimately known throughout the New Zealand volunteer service, and many prominent volunteers con£deir% predict the success of his work as organiser for the National League of New Zealand.
