MAWHERA BICYCLE RACE.
Considerable interest was evinced ■ in the Mawhera bicycle road race, which took place yesterday afternoon, a large number of enthusiasts assembling at the points of commencement and finish. The distance was from the Suburban Hotel to Keown's Hotel and return, the journey to be accomplished twice. The race proved a very interesting one, the handicappers (Messrs P. J. Henne, G. Gregory and W. Ryan) having succeeded in bringing the competitors together very well. After a keenly contested race, the result proved to be— H. Ryan (32 sees) 1 J. Parfitt (51 sees) 2 H. Andrews (scr) 3 The winner covered the distance in 18min '34sec, while Andrews put up the fastest time, viz., 18min ss«. > King (35sec) looked all the way a wajpC ner, but on the return journey collid- ' ed with a cyclist and fell, luckily without serious injury. The winner receives 25s cash, the second placed man an acetylene lamp presented by Messrs H. 0. Harley and Co., and the third a bicycle lamp presented by Messrs Barlow and Co.
