A cable has been received "by tho Minister of Defence from Colonel Bi-idges, who went to England to furnish information to the Colonial Defence Committee, concerning tho proposals to bo made for tho defence of Australia. The message gives some particulars j of what tho Committee recommend, i Tho Committee, it is understood, I considers it to bo necessary to spend j several hundred thousand on new j guns and fortifications before the . coastal defences can bo put in a satisfactory condition, though it is understood that the expenditure can be spread over some years. A large mini her of new guns of heavier calibre than many of those in use at present are necessary, and the fortifications should be considerably strengthened in the near future at Hobart, Fremantlo and Newcastle, but Albany is not considered to be of any great value as a fortified harbor, and the dismantling of the sau e is recommended.
