I lie Government has decided to reconstruct the Native Department and to instilnto changes in the Native Land Court, mauding tlio strengthening of the persound of judges, and to have the Native Land Purchase Department conducted on progressive lines. Edgar, who has been acting Judge of the'Native I,and Court, has been appointed LTuler-Sccre-fary lor Native Affairs, and will take of lice as from the Ist June next. It is understood that his first duty will be organising the whole of the'offices dealing villi native matters. Eor about thirteen years past the business of the Native Department has been carried out under three branches of the Native Office (the recording Department proper, the Nauve Land Court, and Native Land Purchase Ollhv. The two former have been under the jurisdiction of (he ,Department of Just ice, and the hitler under (lie Lands Department. The changes in the Native Land Court have not yet been definitely decided, but will be announced shortly.
