NOTES FROM RUNANGA.
1 (Our Own Oorrespondent.) > The residents of Ruuanga are placed it > a great disadvantage with oilier centres I for the want of a recreation ground. A 'very sensible suggestion was made the [I other day, that as the school ground at [ Rnnanga, which is in the heart of the j town, is cleared; dry, and with plenty of ( room, it could be made an ideal ground with very little expense. I would suggest that the school, sports and: football 1 committees should lake the matter up, and with tlieir accustomed energy would i soon Have a ground that no one could cavil at. It is close to the Railway Station, and the gate money received from . matches could bo utilised in improving • the ground. The Druids ball, which takes place In their lodge room on Friday evening, promises to be the event of the year. The committee are sparing no expense to give 1 satisfaction to their patrons. They have engaged first-class music together with an efficient MiG. and a good floor. Lovers of the light fantastic will have a -real, good time. The ladies’ committee will have charge of the refreshments, and that is sufficient guarantee of tlieir excellence. Definite instructions have been given to a number of those living in the Bachelor’s Gully, to remove lock, stock and barrel at once, as the powers that be have decided that a dray road is necessary to the pit. A- dozen men. are to be put an at once to carry out: tho work. The Co-operative Department, who undertook the spending of the £IOO given by tho Premier when here to gravel the school ground,” have finished the work. It is a great benefit to- the children attending the school, as it enables them to get from the main road to tho school dry shod! It is a pity that the Public Works Department cannot see their way to give the streets made with the beach, gravel a top dressing of tho: local gravel) as unless this .is done, we wilT have! abominable roads. They will not bind of their own accord. Mr McDonald, our. statiohmaater in charge of.’the Eunanga station, is found to be a most obliging officer, and although it was along 'Wait, wo are grateful, M this is the main r station. As-tne pupnla tion is increasing; it .is necessary, that a . post and telegraph office should bo opened in connection with If. ‘At tho same, time, considering tKr number ol «««UoHs leased
Government cannot bo congratulated oil their fniah in making roads in thedis-. trict ,tp allow their tenants to get to their sections. _ , .
