COBDEN ASSAULT CASE.

lit the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr W. G. Kenrick, S.M., G. Musson and G. Campbell were charged with committing a breach of the peace. Sergeant Egan prosecuted,'and Mr W. J. Joyce defended. Musson pleaded “guilty,” while Campbell defended the charge. Charles Noble, signalman, said ho saw Musson and Campbell fighting at the approach to Cobddn bridge, though he could not swear that hp saw Campbell string. A. Petherbridge, railway porter, said he saw the two defendants fighting, though he could not say who began it. Campbell eventually got knocked out. He lay on the ground, and was picked up uy a man who was accompanying Musson. To Mr Joyce.—Before the fight, the defendants were talking for some minutes. He could not swear that there was kicking, though lie saw Musson raise his foot. S. E. Hogg said she was coming to town with Campbell, when they met musson. After a short joking conversation, Musson asked what right Campbell had to go with her. Campbell replied that that was his business. Musson then commenced the fight; Campbell did not strike at all. The last she saw of it was "Campbell lying senseless on the ground. Mr Joyce asked that the charge against Campbell be dismissed, and that Musson be dealt with lightly.

The Magistrate dismissed the charge against Campbell. As to Musson, he appeared to be responsible for the whole trouble. The fact of the private information having been withdrawn, ho would take inlo consideration and reduce the fine, which otherwise would have been severe, lie would fine Musson 60s and costs.
