GREY BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual meeting was held last night. Present —His Worship the Mayor (chair), Crs..McLean, Tennent, Hart, Kerr and Petrie. The Mayor moved the special orders necessary to raising the loan for abattoirs, and pledging rate , for security. Cr Petrie seaonded. Cr. Kerr moved as an amendment that tenders be called for work before the special order is made. He held that they need only borrow the amount of successful tender. . ' Or. Petrie said that they needn't take more money from the Government . than was nwded for the building.

The Mayor took a like yie'w; . Cr; Hart seconded Cr. Eerr's amendment: Mr Lord s-aid it would take ten to get the plans and specifications out. , , Cr. Petrie was in favor of keeping the cost down ; but they only had to draw the amount necessary from the Otaverhinent, arid there Was no need for the amendment';'

Cr. Tennent took a like view. The amenditient was withdrawn and the resolution carried;

The Mayor moved that the Council approve of the draft special order for £15,000 loan. Cr. Tennent seconded. Carried;

Cr.. Petrie moved tliat tlld Mayor and Chairman of Finance Committee be a sub-committee to arrange matters. Cr. Kerr seconded. Carried.

From Harper and others asking for drain in Shakespeare Street. Cr. M'Lean moved that work be put in hand, cost not to exceed £5; Carried. From A. M. P: Society acknowledging receipt of payment of interest and debentures.

From A; Russell asking for drain Referred to Public Works Committee.

From Rev. Trestrail applying for building permit for new Wesleyan Church. Cr Hart said that he v.as surprised that the matter had come up, before being referred to the Church Trustees.

Referred to the Engineer for report. From B. Dixon applying for subsidy of £ for £ on amount received at concert viz. £l2. The Mayor moved that tho amount be paid and that a letter be sent to Mr Dixon thanking him for past services. Cr. Kerr seconded. Carried.

The Works Committee report recommended that Di Ming's lease be taken over and that £SO be paid as compensation. Report adopted. The Water Works Committee recommended that the water be laid on to Mrs Holmes' residence, and that the turnkey be instructed to lay the water along the wharf. Report adopted. A sub-committee recommended thai Mr Lynch's claim for compensation be referred to the Borough Solicitor for his opinion. Report adopted. The Engineer reported on Forsyth and M'Kay's application for permiision to erect building in inner urea in wood and iron, holding that the granting of such an application would be a bud precedent, and recommending that the application be refused. Report adopted. Cr Tennent asked if a permit had been obtained to erect a shod on the street in Chapel Street, The Engineer presumed Cr Tennent referred Morris, sawiniller|s shed. Ho would enquire into the matter. The Clerk reported having obtained Mr Martin's opinion on the question of collecting water half rate. Mr Martin held the Council could collect rate without making connection to fence.
