Great interest was shown yesterday in the result of the contest between Messrs Murdoch and Campbell for the Kumara Borough Council. Both candidates strained every nerve to' get supporters to the poll. However, the result was a surprise to even the most confident supporters of the successful candidate. Mr Murdoch, it was generally admitted, would be returned but no one expected that he would have a majority of over a hundred votes as was the case. We acknowledge- kindiy Xmas greetings from the officers and members of the Star of the West Ledge, United Ancient Order of Druids, which greetings were heartily reciprocate, coming as it does from a band of men formed to mutually aid and assist each other, and ever ready to aid the cause of the widow and orphan. A rumor is current in town to-day that oil has been obtained on a piece of ground at Kotutu. Whether there will bj a sufficient flow to pay, remains yet to be seen. At present it h premature to ofler ( any opinion on the matter. In these days of prohibition and jaunty letters in connection therewith one approaches tlio question of wine with all its joys and sorrow?, with a good deal of diffidence, feiring that the Prohibitionists miy turn on the writer and rend him. Nevertheless as "Wine, maketh glad the heart of man" and is one of the blessings of Nature when properly used, we venture to draw attention to the fact that Mr Swift, representing the celebrated Heidsach brand of wine has just been on a visit to Greymouth in connection with placing his unrivalled "juice of the grape" upon the market. Mes3rs Kettle Bros., who are appointed agents for Heidsach's champagne, have just a choice consignment of special vintage which for excellence excels all other wines at present on the market. Since the appointment of the Grey Town Band to Garrison Band duty of the Westland districts, the members have taken great interest in band matters, one

Therefore they have decided to try and raise the necessary amounts by open air concerts etc. on.Obristmag Eve. Commencing at 11 30 they intend playing under Bandmaster Bennington around the different; streets saered music consisting of Christmas Carols, and we are quite sure the residents will give them a bumper col'ection. The Ahaura-Watterson's dredging claim gave 830z3 9dwts for iy<l hours and has now a splendid prospect before her. The wash is from 20 to :30 feet deep, the gold being very evenly distributed on a very wide face. Mr Ha-greaves,| the local director, is highly pleased with the manner in which the machine is now working, and confidently affirms that the Company will be among the dividendpayers early next year. ■

I Tenders are invited through our advertising columns for th« delivery of logs to the Ahaura sawmill. Specifications may be seen at the mill, where tenders close on Monday, sth January, 1903, at 8 p.m. The Greymou h-Blackwater Lagoon's dredge at Blaekwater is not doing us well as could be expected. The wash is ratber shallow and poor. It seems to thin out ahead of present dredging operations. The Blaekwater Eiver, on which the old Caledonia is now being oreeted, has very much deeper and bet'er ground, and the prospects before the company aro really good. It will, howover bo a oouplo of months before a fair start is obtained. The crops over South Canterbury httvo probably never looked bettor than thoy do at the present time, and thero Is every promise of an abundant harvest. The lato rains have had a very bonoficial effect on feed, and stock everywhere is doing par icularly well. The hou'so-breaking industry has been very busy of lato in Sydney, the fact that several skilful bands have been recently arrested having failed to appreciably affect the burglar activities. Almost nightly fresh eases occur, especially at hotels and tailors' premises.

Contractors are reminded thai tenders for a six roomed cot age in High street close at the office of Mark Sprot and Co before eight o'clock this evening. Everyone is troubled just at this time as to what to give for a Christmas present but parents need have no trouble on this score. "Jack" Cooke, the boy preacher, whose appearance caused so much interest some months asro, has just been adopted by an American millionaire and his wife, Mr and Mrs Brown, of New York. They heard him at Blackpool, and were so impressed that they offered to adopt him and it is understood that he has accepted the offer. Jack Cooke's preaching has created a great sensation in some of the northern towns. In Glasgow ho crowded the largest halls in the city, and numbers were unable to gain admission. Cobden is to be specially favored during the festive season. On December 27tn the annual State School picnic takes p ace, while on New Year's Day the usual Sunday school picnic takes place.
