Received this day at 10 9 a m. Melbourne, This Day.

The shipping difficulty has been amicably settled, and a new agreement signed. The men accept a reduction of ten shillings a month. If the state of the trade is such as to warrant a further reduction another Conference will be held in June, otherwise the present arrangement will continue till January 31st, 1904. Auckland, This Day.

Kneen, the local secretary of the Seamen’s Union, received the following cable from Sydney:—“Matter settled, compromise arranged.” It is understood that the seamen accepted a reduction of ten shillings.
