THE GOLDEN BAY ARGUS (FIAT JUSTITIA, RUAT CŒLUM.) THURSDAY, May. 13, 1909.
The Mr G. W. W. Lightband, who is reported as missing at Nelson and has beyond all reasonable doubt been drowned in a boating accident at Nelson, is the reputed discoverer of gold on the Collingwood goldfields, and the celebrated “ Lighlband’s Gully” took ' its name from him. The Hon. A. R. Guinness, M.P., (says the Grey Argus) has received the following telegram referring to the proposed mining in the reserved area of Auld’s Creek water supply : —"I have decided to allow mining on Auid's Creek Reserve subject to special regulations which are now being framed and will be submitted to applicants at an early dateß. McKenzie. ” Notice the personal pronoun. It is not the Government or the Department who allows the reserve to be mined on, but “ I.” It is now every man for himself, including the Prime Minister, apparently.
“ It’s perfectly just that we old fogeys, however game we think we are, should retire,” declared Mr Hursthouse at a banquet given in Wellington to retiring civil servants, “because if we didn’t, where would the juniors be?” “I am thoroughly in accord with the steps taken,” said another sneaker, L:-eUtenant cc’oucl Hume. “The ' : as-v\ ir-whichthe Goverui has traat .. ns pi events us { having any sort of gr evar.ce • 1 ’ > i U« . policeman stationed on the Queen’s wharf, Wellington, ol> served two hors s attached to a lorry licensed to carry five tons making exceptionally hard work of drawing their load over the comparatively even surface of the wharf. The policeman compelled the driver to have the lead weighed oir the weighbridge. The scales showed that there was no less than j i tons 6 cwt gross weight. A prosecution will follow. The British cruiser Pelorus, a vessel of 2135 tons, is at the present moment almost in the centre of the South American continent says tire };.ajiy Mail). The Pelorus arrived :.t Rio cie Janeiro on November 19. /Viter calling at various ports, tire
..v'.orus arrived at Para, at the mouth of the Amazon, on January re, and made a stay there of nine clays. The cruiser then left for Manaos, a flourishing city about iooo miles up the Amazon. arrived there on January 26, which must be considered a remarkably good performance. The latest news which has been received is that the vessel left on February 5 for Iquitos. The latter place is in Peru, and is only about 600 miles from the Pacific seaboard, while it is nearly 1500 miles from Manaos. It is, of course, well known that the Amazon is navigable by steamers for 2500 miles of its course but no one anticipated that a fairly large war vessel would be able to make the voyage. It is elsewhere notified that the new Valuation Roils for the County of Collingwood are open for inspection at the County office- during the coming week. Interested parlies should bear this in mind as the date of inspection closes on the 19th instant.
Defaulting ratepayers and dog owners will do well to peruse a notification appearing elsewhere which particularly affects them. The County Clerk’s orders are peremptory, and the new S.M. will probably have considerable work to do next month if the notice is ignored after Ist prox. Archdeacon Baker, successor to the late Archdeacon Wright, will visit Collingwood next week and deliver a lecture at the Institute on Thursday evening, 19th instant, on Indian Missions, a subject upon which he is particularly well-in-formed. There wi 1 be a collection to defray expenses. The Archdeacon will hold d vine services on Sunday, 23rd insl nt, at Collingwood at 11 a. l. (Communion) and at Rockville a 7.5 p.m. The Land a .d income Tax Department gives not ce that returns
of income must be furnished net later than ,st June. The Arbitration case arising out of the action brought by A. King against the County Council in connection with a contract, portion of which was settled on Tuesday last, will be held on Saturday next at the County Offices, commencing at 10 a.m. The amount in dispute betwe.en the parlies is about £zc. The arbitrators are Messrs H. Cottier (appointed by King) and R. P. Riley (appointed by the
Council) and, if necessary, evidence will be called by both parties. During the valedictory ptoceedings at Nelson last week consequent upon the retirement of Mr H. Eyre Kenny from the Magisterial bench, at which all the Nelson bar were present, Mr Kenny took occasion to remark that among his most capable public officers was Mr G. H. Harris., the Clerk of the Court and Registrar at Collingwood, who had always lendered him (Mr Kenny) most valuable assistance in the execution of his duties as P.M. and Wa’deti. Mr Harris’ qualifications for the position he occupies have been long since recognised locally, and it is gratifying to notice that they have been appreciated by the highest executive officer we have here. A mild form searlelina has made its appearance in Collingwood. Dr Collins has taken prompt measures in regard to the matter, and no immediate danger of an epidemic is anticipated. Dr Collins, who has been delayed on his journey to Collingwood, arrived on Monday last, and, pending other arrangements, maybe consulted at Madge’s Hotel, The local Friendly .Societies and the Medical Association have an announcement that the doctor has been appointed as medical officer to the various societies they represent as from the 17th instant (next Monday).

Many of our readers will doubtless remember a somewhat eccentric character, who, about a year ago, created considerable excite-
mentlocally by his very unusual demeanour, whose name w: 3 Blackie. A telegram from Blenheim last Saturday would appear to indicate that this man has met his death there, as it says: The body of th man found in the bush at Para on Tuesday afternoon, has been identified as that of Walter Blackie, who for some time lived in Blenheim. He was committed to Wellington Asylum last November, but was released about three mouths ago,, when he came back to this district. When last seen he was going in the direction of the gully where his body was found.” The Nelson Evening Mail says : “Deceased some months ago created a scene or two in the Nelson Police Court. He claimed that he was a nephew of the late Professor Blackie.” Blackie’s eccentricities were quite as marked in this district, and his conduct eventually came under the notice of the police, which finally resulted in hia leaving our community. One Sunday evening at the Church, when the offertory plate was being passed round at the usual time Blackie, with much ostentation and noise, interrupted the quiet of the Church by depositing therein a huge cheap Waterbury watch, with chain attached, which he claimed and recovered the following day. His aimless and aggressive wanderings into private dwellings at all hours of the night also caused much uneasiuess in the community at the time.
