London’s army of pauper lunatics is on the increase, and the mental experts connected with the medical, superintendents of the various Lon-j don asylums give as the reasons forj this increase “drink and heredity.” j This year there are nearly 25,000 j lunatics under treatment in pauperj asylums, an increase of over B,oooj in fifteen years. j
During the last year 3,814 newj patients were admitted to the various institutions, and a table of the occupations of the patients shows! how prevalent mental disorder is in! the essentially working classes, thej underpaid, overworked submei’gedi tenth of London. :
