THE GOLDEN BAY ARGUS. (FIAT JUSTITIA, RUAT CŒLUM.) THURSDAY, SEPT. 1 5th , 1904.

Oi: i i nauy morning last, at the local Court., before Messrs F. West and F. StalUrd, justices, two well-known *• men about town" were charged on the information of Constable Foley with being illegially on premises, to wit, the Oolliugwood Public Library and Institute, and with destroying furniture therein The evidence disclosed that & few nights previously both accused had entered the Institute building sometime after II p.m. and \*. camped" there for the nigot, and, to make themselves comfortable, had kindled a fire witu the chairs in the institution. Both accused pleaded guilty, one of them making an eloquent tip .rial to the Bunch, stating that as tiie Institute was always "open to the public, and had on previous occasions offered a welcome shelter to " dead beittH" during the hours of compulsory abstinence from alcohol, he did not apprehend that any serious notice would be taken of their action, which had practically become a convenient custom. An unsympathetic Bench lined both accused a total sum, with costs, £8 18s., to be paid within a fortnight, or, in default, seven days imprisonment, the fine also covering the value of the furniture destroyed. Constable Foley applied for prohibition Orders against the two accused, and, by consent of both accused, the orders were granted for twelve months. The practice of obtaining for and supplying drink to prohibited persons is i\ot unknown in our district. Sympathiser* with prohibited men do not perhaps fully realise the seriousness of the offence they coining when they agree 01 undertake to obtain liqnor for this class of men, and it can hardly be said that such actions are anything than misplaced kindness. On jpYiday and Saturday last the local Constable had considerable difficulty in getting a recently- prohibited person clear of the town, who by some occult means was enabled to remain in a semi-intoxicated condition for fortyeight hours after ah order had been is-iued against him. A time will shortly cotne when justice will overtake those who by a feeling of mistaken kindness circumvent all efforts made % \he police and others to save these Unfortunates from the effects of their own folly. , A special meeting of the County Council'was held at the Institute on Friday evening last, all members but Or Fellowea being present. The only bijtt.ui.ess to be dealt With has the making of a! special order, applying for a liJan of £IOOO for road work at Taitapu, which was. resolved to be done, on the nijtion of Or Johnson, seconded by Cr Washbourd. The full text of the resolution appears' in bur advertising columns. The next ordinary meeting of the Council will be held on Monday week, 20tb instant.

'fha Slate River Sluicing Company ha* had another very satisfactory washing-up, the returns beiug largely i»>" excess of working expenses. . A movement, is on foot to form a Ride Club in this district, and with that object in view a public meeting will be hold at the Institute on Saturday evening next, 17th instant. The Puponga Coal Company has completed the purchase from the Cape Coal Company of all the latter company's eo&lleases at Puponga, and paid over a substantial sum as purchase money therefor. The operations at the Puponga Coal Company's mine at Puponga are gradually extending to very considerable proportions, the output of coal having now assumed very subotantial proportions. It ia eaid that last Saturday no leas than four steamers and three sailing vessels entered Puponga harbour to load coal. It is now quite an ordinary occurrence to stfo steamers and sailers making Puponga- wards for freights.

Successful auction sale* of the residue of the stock, plant, and freehold of Mr F. btuvenson, storekeeper, of Tasuian Street, have been held dm ing the week., On Saturday and Monday the male was conducted throughout the day, tho attendance of the public being considecaoie. The sale will be continued on Mouday afternoon next, who/., a* will be seen by reference to ath'uttideineut in another column, a vo.y iarge and varied assortment of ge.ierai goods, drapery, groceries, etc., etc., will be ottered, the goods remain-

ing in Mr Steveusou's shop having been augmented by entries of stock from Nelson and elsewhere, all of which will be sold absolutely without reserve. The public would do well to carefully read the advertisement, and to uotw that the sale will commence at one o'clock sharp. The final match for the Junior Football Cup was played at the Athletic Ground last Saturday, between the Takaka and ColliugWood teams, when the latter team proved the victors, scoring three points to their opponents' nil. Very little interest was displayed in the match. The next sittings of the local Courts will be held on Tuesday week, 27th instant at the usual hour. The new business set down for hearing up to the present is not of a very important character, and will not apparently occupy much timß in disposal. One of the light-keepers at Kahurangi Point Lighthouse, a man named Ansin, was very severely kicked in the stomach by a horse last week, and for several days laid at the Lighthouse in a very precarious condition. The Marine Department, to whom the matter was reported, sent out Mr G. W. Riley, senr., and to-day Mr Riley brought the injured man into Collingwood. Present indications are much' in favour of recoovery from a serious accident which was at first expected to end fatally.

The tribuiwa who bar© for some time been working the old Collingwood iGoldfieldi company's ground and plant at Quartz Ranges, have met with highly payable results. The big flood in Match last, which did so much damage alj ever the district, carried away some portions of their fluming of the race from Boulder Lake which cost over £IOO to repair. Exclusive of thotime occupied in re-instating the fluming, the tributers have had a five months run and have just oleaned up 230 ounces of gold as the result, a return that hag been most satisfactory. The tributers are operating on quite new ground on Debtor's Terrace, and a few months similar work is apparently ahead of them. The tributers are four in number, Messrs 0. Curnbw K. McKenna, and W. and A. Diamond) and they have employed two wages men for the period above named. Most satisfactory results from the Slate River dredge are redorted during the week. Having got over the lower end of Eraser's Bar the dredge is' now entering on the ground recently purchased from Mr J. Day, and report says the yield of gold is averaging an ounce for. .every hour's work. We learn that shares inthis successful company are realising quite sensational prices.

Mr W. Packard, of Takaka, advertises a useful horse for sale.
