A SOLDIER CRIES FOR A LADY.
When Marshal Saxe was besieging Maestricht, in 1748, he divided his time between siege operations and Mdllo. Chantilly, tlie prima of an opera company that he kept in liis camp for amusement during leisure hours. She ran off one dark, stormy night with the leader of tho orchestra, and tho same time a flood in tho river Maes broke tho bridges and divided tho army. Tho Marshal’s officers came to him with tho intelligence and found him in tears; they were panic-stricken, supposing the disaster to be very serious, but could not restrain their laughter when they found he was crying about Chantilly.
