MINING NEWS.
Parapara Iron Leases. Once more the vast iron deposits at Parapara. have attracted the attention of capitalists, and the extensive leases have been re-applied for. Many experts regard this magnificent iron deposit as the most important asset the Colony can boast, and it is sincerely to be hoped that the present activity in respect to it will lead to something tangible being effected in the near future. Pakawau Coal Mine. After a good many months of preparatory work Messrs Caldwell and Sons are now sending coal down for shipment at Pakawau. A splendid seam of first-class coal has been developed in the mine in solid country, with every appears nee of permanency. A connect ■ ing tramline has been completed, and a large pier run out for several chains into the Pakawau tide channel, and the whole mine opened up for practical and expeditious working. The first shipment of coal has already been sent down. Puponga Coal Mine. Here also indications are more than promising, and preparatory operations are assuming practical shape. The men employed have, we learn from Mr Taylor, unearthed some really good seams of first-class coal of late, and extensive driving has taken place. The tramway is completed all the way to the point of shipment, where a pier and coal bunker have been constructed. Mr Taylor has commenced to send down coal, and the first shipment is to be made by the Lady Barkly next spring tides.
A company has, we learn, been formed, called the Puponga Coal and Gold Mining Company, by which English capital is being brought in for the working of the mine on a considerable scale. It will be noticed on inference to our advertising columns that the above Company has applied for the special quartz claim at Boulder River known locally as “ Taylor’s Reef,” which became famous as the cause of litigation some year or two ago. It is said that sornesamplesof rich stone were obtained from this reef. The advent of another Company to our district under such encouraging prospects should be a matter of congratulation to both the district and the company concerned.
