THE GOLDEN BAY ARGUS. (FLAT JUSTITIA, RUAT CŒLUM.) THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21st, 1897.

A number ot local gentlemen have formed themselves into a Christy Minstrel society, and have entered into practice for a " nigger" entertainment, having for its object the raising of money for the Piano Fund, and a new form of amusement for the Collingwooil public will shortly be announced.

Mr John Moore, son of the late Captain Moore, a young man wellknown in this district, met with a severe accident while bushfelling at Masterton last week. We learn that although seriously injured about the head, the young man is improving this last day or so.

Mr R. Pettitt, who has a high reputation in the Colony as a horse trainer, notifies that he will give lessons in the art on Saturday next. Interested parties should not miss the opportunity of learning a few " wrinkles."

Owing to the poorness of the tides, the Barkly has been "stuck-up" in Takaka since Monday last, and for some unexplained reason the Collingwood mails were not forwarded on until noon to-day, the public suffering considerable loss and inconvenience thereby. Someone in authority exhibited either extreme red tapeism or absolute idiocy in allowing the mails to lie for nearly three days within two hours' drive of the Post Office here, and the matter requires the urgent attention of the Department.

The Takaka Brass Band gave a very successful concert at the Public Hall on Friday evening last, the attendance being very goud. The Band is almost entirely composed of Takaka natives, under the conductorship of Mr 11. Williams, and their manipulation of the various instruments was very creditable indeed. The members of the Band filled in the time with singing, farces, etc., and were assisted by Miss Young, Messrs C. Ellis and F. Cottier, all of whom received enthusiastic encores for their contributions. A dance followed the concert and also proved very enjoyable. Previous to the concert and on the following morning the Band discoursed sweet music in several parts of the town, and attracted a goodly crowd of appreciative listeners.

On Thursday evening last Bro. J. M. Davics, of the Salvation Army, assembled quite a host of the small fry of the town, of both sexes, at the Public Hall and had what he terms a " singing buttle" in aid ot the Army Self Denial Fund. The children had previously undergone some training in the singing of Sankey's Hymns, and their rendition of all the items on Thursday evening was much appreciated by the considerable audience which attended. The programme included solos, duetts, quartettes, part soßgs, etc., and ad acquitted themselves very creditably indeed. The body of young Hamilton Fellowes, who was drowned recently in the Mokihinui River, was recovered on Friday last, and brought to Takaka by steamer on Monday evening. The remains were interred at the East Takaka Cemetery on Tuesday, the funeral (at which many Collingwood people were present) being one of the largest ever witnessed in Takaka.

As will be seen by advertisement elsewhere in this issue, the local Lodge of Druids intend holding their usual anniversary fete on 9th November next. The programme appears to bo a very inviting one, and if the weather is favourable the celebrations' should be one of the most interesting and enjoyable events of the year.

JUST OPENED.—A Good Assortment of Yates Reliable Vegetable and Flower Seeds.

Also on hand a few tons SEED POTATOES, —Vermonts, Breeze's, Victory, Pink Eyes. Others to arrive in a few days.—L. SUTTON.

The annual meeting of the local Athletic Association will be held on Saturday week, 130th inst. As the time is fust drawing nigh when steps will have to be taken to make prelitninaiy arrangements for the annual Sports, it is hoj.ed that universal interest will betaken in the Association and be a large attendance of the public.

The Poad Board did not receive one tender for the two contracts for road work on the West Wanganui mndfiat, tenders for which closed on Saturday last. This is the second time this work has failed to elicit a single oiler. It v, 8 resolved to invite Irish lenders to close at ue:;t oidinary meeting, and a notification to that ell'eet appears elsewhere in this issue. The Chairman and Messrs R. t. lUiey and W. Allan were the i embers present.
