GIRLS WHO NEVER HAVE LOVERS.

Who are the women who go sweetheartless through life ? Are they the plain, the foolish, the dowdy, the insignificant? By no means. "it is only necessary to glance around the circle of engaged and married women to disprove this, for is it not patent to every one that these ladies are largely recruiied from the ranks of the unintelligent, the incapable, the silly, and the homely featured ? And is it not equally clear that some of the best-looking, refined, clever, and managing women are neglected and overlooked by men ? Way is this? Well, there are several reasons to account for it, one being a want of a certain “something in them, which “something” is none the less powerful in attracting men because it is difficult to define. " For instance, I know a very goodlooking woman who openly acknowledges she never had a lover, and who, upon being asked “ why?” replied : “ I really don't know, only somehow men never did care for me 1” Again, there are other women equally swainless simply because of an excess of “ grandmotherliness ” in their natures. Striken youths go to them with their tales of love for others, stalwart men loudly claim their sympathy for their hopeless passions for Miss Elirt ; but it never occurs to either youths or men that “grandmamma” is anything but “grandmamma,” and therefore to be treated as such.

AN INCIDENT IN A GERMAN LOTTERY.

The Germans are fond of gambling, especially the labouring clas3esandclerks_ Consequently, the great money lottery of the city of Wesel, on the Rhine, was eagerly taken up in all parts of Germany. At” the end of December the winning numbers were drawn from an urn in the Town Hall of Wesel, in the presence of the authorities, and were officially published. It was Christmas time, and the prize-winners were in great jubilation. Une young man, who had won the great prize of £7,500, at once threw up his employment, and launched into extravagant expenditure. But, alas! the following day the Wesel authorities discovered that nearly the fifth of the numbers had been forgotten in a drawer, and bad consequently not been placed in the urn ' An attempt was made to keep the matter secret, but a young secretary, who held several bonds, published the irregularity of the proceedings, and the result of the draw was annulled by the Minister of Finance by telegram. In a few days a fresh draw took place. A vast deal of heartburning resulted in this error, for not one of the number who drew prizes the first time secured a winning number the second. There is nothing “certain ” in this world.
