We learn that the request of the ■Aorere Works Committee for a further vote of £75 to complete the Pakawau Bush Road has been granted by the Government, and that that sum is now available lor completion of the work. Mr McKenzie, M.H.R., was mainly instrumental in obtaining the vote. The Government has also remitted the balance (£120) of the Stanton’s and Doctor’s ’-Greeks Bridges vote. JUST RECEIVED.—A few tons first-class Potatoes. 8/6 per sack cash.— “G. Fisher. We learn that Mr John Shaw, of Pakawau, was taken suddenly ill at the 'Golden Ridge (where he was at work ' constructing the water race for tho Taitapu Estates) and had to be carried to the Store at the head of the mudflat on a stretcher, and from thence taken to his home by boat and other conveyance. Dr Bode was telegraphed for and was soon : in attendance on the sufferer, who is now slightly better than he was. W. C. Riley and Co have opened and (are showing Blankets, Rugs, Flannelettes, Men’s and Boys’ Clothingj Hosery, &c.

The meeting held at Rockville on Saturday evening last to discuss the 'subject of the disposal of the Medical Aid "Fund was presided over by Mr J. G. Lash, and was fairly well attended. A "resolution was pa ;sed to grant £25 of the Fund to Dr Fisher; but we learn that Mr W. C. ltiley, Trustee of the Fund, declines to act on the resolution x)f the meeting, rightly contending that no one small portion of the community should have the power to dispose of the Fund in any way. The Trustee also fairly argues that he himself called a public meeting some weeks ago for the same purpose, at which anyone could have been present, and at which it was decided not to entrench further on the Fund at present; so that there appears to be a deadlock over the matter. Winter Dress Goods, Hats and Trimmings, Jackets, Capes, Mackintoshes, Woollen and Fur Goods, Flannelettes in great variety at W. 0. Riley's and Co’s. In reference to the claim of <£s made by Mr C. Hill, contractor for the Stanton’s Creek Bridge, for extras done in connection with the above work, we learn that the Aorere Works Committee have offered to compromise the matter by payment of .£l.

The result of the Licensing Election held last week as given in our adverlising columns may he considered satisfactory, so far as the proper representation of this county on the Committee is concerned, two councillors having obtained seats thereon ; but on the general principle of useless waste of public money it is to be deplored that such a vast expenditure has taken place in providing a Committee for this Licensing Distiict, when an uncontested election might have given the same satisfactory result. The cost of the election will approximate .£l5O, and of this the Collingwood County will have to contribute about onefourth or .nearly <£4o,.a very considerable sum from .the annual revenue of the county. The interest taken in the election throughout the Licensing District was very meagre, and this will be seen from the fact that Collingwood district alone contributed nearly onefourth of the votes recorded, while the average number of votes polled at each booth could not have exceeded twenty voters. Altogether the election has been a very expensive luxury for the district generally.

The Bachelors’ Ball at Bainham last Thursday evening proved an unqualified success, being 1 very largely attended By residents from all parts. The Hall was most beautifully decorated with nikau palms, ferns, flowers and fruits, and presented a very pleasing appearance. A supper was provided of such delicacies as only country people know how to cater to the popular taste, and it is needless to say was done full justice to. Dancing was indulged in and kept up with great animation till daybreak.

Mr James Serimgeour has already obtained the necessary instruments for the Collingwood Juvenile Fife and Drum Band, which arrived by steamer this week. The instruments number twentyfive and include flutes, picolos, triangle, kittle drum and others. Much of the money required for the purchase of these handsome instruments has been advanced by Mr Serimgeour, and subscribers to the Fund are reminded that the early pay* meat of their subscriptions is desirable. Mr Serimgeour has already got the boys well in training, and we may hope to soon see and hear a well organised Band amongst us.

Mr Coutts, Manage) at Taitapu Estates has received news by wire of the sudden death of Mr J. D. Lance, a gentleman who recently visited this district and Taitapu in company with Mrs Lance and Mr John Tinline. Mr Lance’s death occurred while returning from his visit here, and when only one day’s journey from his home.

Mr P. Aylward was the successful tenderer for the Race Cutting and Stripping contracts for the Rocky River Sluicing Company, the prices being lq/G and 153 per chain respectively. The
