COLLINGWOOD ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary meeting was held on Monday evening, all the members being present. Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed. Mr Skilton reported having attended to the work undertaken by him, as required by the Board at last meeting. Mr Woodfield said the Board would have to be careful about taking out the culverts and filling in the road—it caused water to back up in places, which doos injury to the road. A discussion took place on the advisability or otherwise of cutting ditches along the roodside to carry away the water, and tho subject dropped. CORRESPONDENCE. Letter read from J. James, jun., stating that he had laid off work on the byroad leading to his place, Riverdale, as required by resolution of the Board at last mooting.—Resolved that tenders be
called for the work, to be in by next meeting. Letter from Handcock Bros., applying for permission to fell bush on road between their section and W. Allan's, at Riverdale, for 4/ per chain. —Resolved, that the work be authorised.
Letter from W. H. Curnow, drawing the Board's attention to the almost impassable state of the road from Aorore Bridge to Fletcher's Cutting on Kaifcuna Plain ; also pointing out the necessity for footbridges across creeks in that locality.—Resolved that Mr J. E. Skilton be authorised to erect footbridges.
Letter from J. Winstone, enclosing plans, specifications, and estimate of cost ( £8), of a bridge over Clay Creek, Riverdale; the writer stating that the present bridge was impassable for vehicles, and the fordwsy unsafe. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Skilton, seconded by Mr Woodfield, That the work be done according to the specifications, etc., subnutted by Mr Winstone,' he being empowered to get the work done. Letter from Secretary to Minister for Agriculture, enclosing copy of the Small Birds Act. —Held over. Letter read from numerous residents of Pakawau and West Wanganui, complaining of dangerous state of bridges* in the Pakawau Bush, and signifying their intention to claim damages for accidents which might occur thereon.—Messrs J. W. Riley and Shaw supplied information regarding the Big Bridge in that locality as requested at last meeting, and a long discussion ensued.—Mr Skilton advocated doing away with the bridge altogether and making a road round the hillside, on account of less cost and permanency.— Other members and Mr Shaw were of opinion that the bridge should be taken, out and the road filled in.—Resolved, that the Big Bridge be advertised unsafe for vehicular traffic; that the other bridges complained of be repaired—Mr Harvey to be asked to do required work ; and that the Board visit and inspect the bridges on Sunday week. GENERAL. The plan of bridge at Dining Table Cutting was submitted.—After inspection it was resolved that tenders be called for the work, to close in a fortnight. Resolved, that a man be sent at once to repair road at Parapara. In re Jeffries application to fell bush on road at Riverdale.—A plan of the road was produced, and it was resolved that Jeffries be permitted to fell the bush as requested, only as far as he fells his own bush.
Mr Woodfield spoke of the rate of wages paid by tho Board. He considered 8/ per day too high a rate. He was the last man to reduce wage 3, but he thought the Board could not afford to pay so much when such a lot of day work was done.
Tho Chairman asked that something be done on tho street leading past his store. —Resolved that the Chairman see what work was required, and arrange to have it done. Mr Skilton was authorised to get done some little further work at 15-inile creek. Mr Woodfield again brought forward the subject of renewing the footbridge over Dall's Creek. He suggested that the bridge bo lengthened and portion of the footpath leading to it be abolished,
