MAKINO

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Tbe Makino Women’s Institute was favoured with brilliant sunshine fop their garden party. Tlie President, Mrs J. Mason, welcomed the visitors and introduced Mrs McCorkindale, a member of t-lie Dominion executive. who declared the proceedings open after an interesting speech dealing with tlie history of the W.I. movement from its beginnings in tlie wilds of Canada to tbe world wide organisation of tlie present day. Slie explained the various ways in which the Institutes co-operate with other associations. Amongst the amusements of the afternoon was clock golf, tbe winners being Mr Mason and Mr s A. Laing. A croquet, competition was won by Mr Younger and Mrs Mason and a. tennis tournament by Mr D. Humphreys and Miss D. Daing. Tbe children’s treasure hunt wa,s won by Graham Simpson. Other competitions, were tlie dress in g of peg dolls, Mrs Petty being firjst and Mrs Y. Reid second. and the guessing of liquids by tlieir smell, resulting in a, tie between Mr H. Beazer and Mr D. Reid. Members of tbe Bulls W.I. gave a display of folk dancing on the grass, an item much appreciated by the spectators, who afterwards visited Mr H- Clover’s h cartful garden adjoining tbe ball grounds, .at tbe invitation of tbe owner. The mag- ' liificent blooms, 'especially of the dahlias, were much admired, their size and exquisite colourings being a. revelation to* many of tbe visitors.. Miss B. Green was the winner of a dinner given by m;embers of tbe Hall Committee. The produce stall was well laden and a, needlework stall attracted many customers. The ice cream and sweet stall was well patronised bv the children. Afternoon tea was served in the hall which was tastefully decorated for the occasion.
