THE POTENTIALITIES

SOUTH ISLAND FUTURE THE GOLD INDUSTRY “I was favourably impressed with the feeling- or confidence everywhere I went. I liad the opportunity when speaking of detailing- what had been done n the Government and the feeling that was generally expressed was that the Government had acted in the. best interests o f all,” said Premier Forbes speaking about liis visit to Otago and Southland. Mr Forbes said that in Central Otago he was very much interested in the development of flic gold mines. A great deal o- J work was going on in different direction and the work of the geophysical survey staff was followed with keen interest. Mining- had gone almost as far as was possible with the experience of the old miners; huf now. with the geophysical survey, a great stimulus would be given the work. One of tile many tilings that the geophsyicnl survey parties bad been working oil was the locating of some of tile leads that had disappeared, and thus enabling them to be worked on a large scale. The parties had every confidence that they would he able to discover where those old leads had gone to. Many of tlic claims Glad been worked to the full capacity of sluicing and now it was a. question of mining with shafts. Another thing that impressed him was the constant belief that there would be considerable development in the mining industry. One could bear, he said, of a number of companies which were quite pleased with the results they were getting. He came from Central Otago with the feeling that it was likely to provide an avenue for the emplovment of a large number of men in the future.
