INSURANCE FRAUDS

Auckland, Bepteiulier 10 The “amazing'’ series of insurance frauds mentioned in the Sydney cable gram probably refers to the operations of a gang of five men in several centres. including Auckland, in 1916-18 In small sums they defrauded insurance companies of a substatnial sum.
The gang would rent an empty house and furnish it with new furniture, which would be insured for perhaps £IOO. The furniture would then be removed to another empty house rented by a. second member of the gang and again insured. Each time it was. removed it would be replaced by -a few pounds’ worth of secondhand articles. Then the houses would be set fire to and a claim would he made for insurance.
One of the gang was arrested find imprisoned for setting fire to a shop. Cases of goods which he had forwarded from one town to another were found to contain pieces or rock.
