Work in connection with the

city stormwater drainage scheme, which forms a portion of the city work plan to relieve unemployment, was commenced this morning. A few men were put on to erect tool sheds on the old dock site, and before the end of the week JO men will he working, stated tin* Mayor, AlrG. W. Hutchison, this morning. Additional men, he said, would be placed as opportunity offered during the progress o-‘ the job.

The total estimated cost of the work is £44,346* Direct labour wil absorb £20,205 and indirect labour £10,590. The men wili he paid ordinary wages and will work the same number of days ns if on relief, plus one day T-ater on work will he commenced on the .Mount Hobson resor voir under the same scheme.
