STALE WAGE DEDUCTIONS AN EMPLOYER’S LAPSE t I'ei t'ress Asscciatioiii. Palmerston North. April 10 Live charges of failing to pay tlm unemployment emergency tax within three days of deducting it from his employees’ wages were preferred against Thornes James Helyer in the Police Court before Mr J. L. Stout. S.M.. this morning. Defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined £ 1 and costs on each charge. The Inspector of Labour. Mr W. H. Cadwalhuler, said defendant had deducted, the tax from his employees’ wages, but bad failed to pay it as required bv the Unemployment Act. The department viewed the case as serious, and he bad been .instructed to ask for a heavy penalty. Counsel for defendant said defendant was a small manufacturer of goods which were sold on consignment in Eng. land. He was entirely dependent noon liis returns from l,is goods to pay bis way. He bad no intention of evading payment. but had simply postponed payment of the tax until be had sufficient funds to met the commitments. H“ bed ’>e paid the tax due up to April 8.
