NEW ZEALAND APPLES ACTION BY FRANCE (Pea Press Association) Wellington April 10 Advice was received by hath the Government and the Fruit Export Control Board that tile French Government had decided to impose a surtax of 15 per cent, in terms of sterling values on imports of New Zealand apples. The impost, it is stated, is to counteract New Zealand’s high exchange rate, although no action in this direction has been taken against Australia. New Zealand exported about 20.000 cases of apples to France last year, and it- was fully intended to build thi.s total up to about 50,000 eases this export season. However, as a result of the surtax, only about 20,000 cases will go direct, although another 20,000 cases w ill he transhipped from London if the market warrants this course.
