As a retsult of the Uncmiiloymant Board’s decision not to assist in purchasing a pumping plant. (be AVar-i mine at Hikuraiigi is being abanduncd. A start wa s made to withdraw tin- pumps this morning. There is grave fear that the flooding of the Warn mine will scon render the Hikurangi Coal Co.’s mine unworkable, as the flood waters will he beyond the Company’s capacity to keep down. Over 1200 people are entirely dependent upon tlie milling industry, the collapse of which would mean a big losi> to a large district.
