The Australian -Jockey Club’s spring carnival opened at Randwick 011 Saturday in dull but fine weather. The attendance was 46.000. Recent rains made the track slow. Gainc Carrington proved a bitter disappointment to libs supporters in the A.J.C. Derby. The New Zealander never appeared to have a chance. On returning to scale his jockey, R. Reed, said his mount got his tongue over the bit, which accounted for his poor display. The Derby winner, Peter Pan, la described as an outstanding colt. He is a regular galloping machine, and a great Finisher, capable of even more important achievements than yesterday’s classic. His trainer, Frank McGrath, says he will not race him ag'ain at the Randwick meeting, but is sending him to Mel-' bourne for the Cups. Peter Pan’s rider, Pike, said his mount was playful at the start, and lost a little ground, but after that he had a smooth passage, but was inclined to loaf in the straight. After a cut with the whip he straightened up and went on to win well. Prince Pombal was most prominent in the running for the Derby, and looked dangerous, but lie finished seventh. Milantheon was eighth, ■ and Gain© Carrington tenth. | Pike’s next success was on the 1 Epsom winner Chatham. Chatham I was away smartly into a good position, and when challenged into the straight responded brilliantly. Tacko Pentheus and Gold Mag never flattered their friends. Gold Mag was highly spoken of prior to the race, but was never in the picture and finished 13th. Oratorian was seventh and shaped rather well. Havering commenced smartly, but faded out at the finish, and was 12th. Pike completed the liat trick cn the brilliant Veilmond in the Spring Stakes. He rode in a masterly fashion, and received an ovation on returning to scale. Night march lost all chance in the Spring Stakes, being in a. pocket on the rails. He got clear in the straight, and . finished stoutly to gain third money. Pike also rode Burracootboo into second place in the Kensington Handicap, and very nearly snatched victory.
