WARNING OF EARTHQUAKE
BELIEF REGARDING BIRDS INCIDENTS AT GISBORNE A belief that birds receive some warning of ponding earthquakes is supported by various reports received of the cries of birds, notably pheasants, preceding some of the minor shocks experienced during the last week or two (says a Gisborne paper). There are a large number of pheasants on Hospital Hill, which is a sanctuary, and residents in that locality report, that the birds were very . noisy immediately before the sharp shock which was experienced the other morning, while wekas are also reported to have shown unusual activity. It is recalled some years ago when an upheaval occurred in the Waimata district, a large area being affected by the upheaval of mudsprings, the first indication that anything abnormal was occurring was the awakening of residents by the cries of phea-sant g on the hillaides.
