UNIT FROM RACING CAR PRESENTATION TO MUSEUM "Per Treae Association) Auckland, Aug. 12. The epicycle gear box used by Sir Malcolm Campbell in liis racing car Blue Bird from 1927 to 1929, which was recently purchased by an Auckland engineer. Mr. G. S. Edlin. has been presented by Mr. Edlin to tlie Auckland War Memorial Museum, together with a note from Kir Malcolm giving details of the occasions on which tlie gear box was used. At present the gear box is at Auckland University College, where engineering students have been studying the principle on which it operated. In a letter received by >lr. Edlin, Sir Malcolm sahl he was very glad to hear the! the unit was proving of so mu'-k interest. lie enclosed a note stating that the gear box was built specially for tlie Blue Bird, and was Actually in us whn the following world’s land speed records were obtained; Pendine Sands, England, cue mile at an average of 174.9 miles an hour, on February 20, 1927: Daytona. Florida, one mile at 206.9 miles an hour, on February 19. 1928; t erne ui, Jan, South Africa, Hit: kilometres at 216.3 and live miles at 216.6 miles an hour, on April 26. 1929.
