PRISONER OF MOUNT EDEN WARNING SHOT FIRED (Per Press Association.) Auckland, Aug. i-. An unsuccessful dash for liberty wits made by a prisoner ul Mount Eden gaol. Venables, who was sentenced in Wellington in 1027 to seven years’ imprisonment for assault, was working with the others in tiii‘ stone quarry close to the Colonial Ammunition Co.’s works. When obscured from the warders’ vision by a small shed he ilia !o a dasli up the quarry face. He was seen by the warder as he readied the first of two wire fences at tlie side of the quarry. The prisoner climbed the lirst fence as a shut was tired by one of the war lers to warn him tb .t he bad boon seen. lie jumped to the other side of the fence and waited for his pursuers to reach, submitting quietly to recapture. It is stated there was littl • possibility of his making an escape as he had another fence to negotiate.
