GAMING CHARGES
ROTORUA MEN BEFORE COURT £IOO FINE INFLICTED (Press Pio-a Association) Rotorua, Aug. 10. Three men, John Steven Maskery, llori Man and Michael John llefferen, appeared before Air. S L Patterson, S.M.. to-day, charged with breaches of tlie Gaining Act. Ileffcren was lined £2O on a charge of carrying on business as a bookmaker, anil a secbii I charge of eonducting a gaming liousc was dismissed. Man was charged with aiding in tile conduct of a gaining house. He pleaded not guilty, electing to take tlie case before a jury. On a second summary charge of permitting premises to be used as a common gaming house, lie was convicted and lined £IOO Tlie police stated this defen ]- sint lmd four previous convictions. Ileffcren was convicted and lined £2O for carrying on business as a bookmaker, and £5 on a second charge of laying totalisator odds. Maskery was culled as a xiolice witness against Man, but owing to his refusal to answer questions, lie was ordered to be treated as a hostile witness. He was warned of tlie consequence of iierjury. All tin.- charges were the result of a police raid on the day of the AVellington races on July. Mi.
