POHANGINA PROTEST

THE W AGES TAX

BACK PAY DEMANDED The Government Audit Offioc advised the Pohaugina County Council that the wage tax of Id in every 6s 8d was payable om wages or salary reccived after May 1, 1932, although earned prior to that date. The secretary reported ihat the whole of the county’s pay sheets would have to be readjusted and the extra 9d paid by employees. Councillors thought tlic decision a very unjust one, as it penal ved the men who through no fault of their own had been unable to collect their pay o n Alay 1. On the motion of Cr. Howell it wa- s decided to protest-, pointing out that in many cases the council was unable to collect that- additional tax. In any ca«e it was a very late hour for the department, to bring the matter up.
