CHASE IN THE CITY
thief surprised in shop SUDDEN DASH FOR LIBERTY ESCAPE THROUGH A THEATRE (Per Progs Association) Auckland, Aug-. 10. A burglar who was surprised in a Queen street shop was chased through the. city streets In' the manager of the shop and a constable, but he escaped by running through the lobby of a theatre. He entered the Majestic Theatre through the Lome street doors and hastened down the -stairs leading to the Queen street, entrance. When 'liis pursuers reached this spot the man was nowhere m sight.
A later examination of the shop showed that the intruder had entered through a skylight which had been closed, but not. locked, when the employees left at 5.30 o’clock. He climbed on to the roof of a shed at the back of the premises and was able to reach the skylight- He then let himself into the shop. It is probable that lie was surprised just as he opened a till and began stealing the contents. All that was missing wag. 3* 6d in pennies.
