DINNER TENDER HD BY CITIZENS | TRIBUTE TO NEW ZEALANDER A large and representative gathering attended a dinner given at the Hotel Australia, Sydney, no Air T JR,. Bavin, former Premier of New South Wales. The banquet hall was tilled, with citizens representative of all sections of the community. The Prime Minister (Air Lyons), - in pro-sposiug the toa-'t of the guest i= el the evening, said that Air Bavin j was one of the big figures in Aus- • tralian. public Jife. He had played a. courageous part. >n the- darkest days of the depression, and his one regret wa s that Air Bavin wa s not able to take part n the- eo-operation between his and other Governments for Au-tralian restoration. If the people had listened to Mr Bavin two years ago. the whole course of Australian history would have been changed and ih 0 country would now have been well on l l* - * way to prosperity. Mr Steven* said that what Bavin had said in 1030 had been right. Mr Bavin, in responding, said that hi s chiefest regret was that he had been deprived, through ill health o.f playing a part in the co-operation between Governments. Mr Stevens had takc/n over at a very difficult time but he was equal to the difficulties. He was gJnd to say that he himself was restored ( to health, and hoped to take a. P«t in the public life ef the State and. to assist the ■State and his colleagues in the'r difficult task.
