TRADE WITH BRITAIN
REPLY TO AIR BALDWIN FIGURES FOR NEW ZEALAND SHOW A AI ARK ED DIFFERENCE (Per Press Association.) Auckland, July 30.
Commenting on the figures quoted at Ottawa hv Air Baldwin, Dr. Neale, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, said there- was something seriously wrong. Air Baldwin was reported as saving that Britain’s *mpoi’ts from Dominion i.u 1930 were valued at. £M,9oo.oo*' u-nd • tlic exports to New Zealand at £ 18,760.000. According to the 1932 crfi'icial year book, the figures were £36,000,000 and £21,000,000, showing an apparent balance of £15,000,000 not- £26,000,000. Even £15,000,000 exaggerated the position, as much of the New Zealand exports found their way to Europe. Tuese re-exports amounted some £7,000,000, so that the real balance of trade was about £8,000,000, not £26,000,000. It was diflicultto -oe on what basis Air Baidvln’s figures were arr'ved at. In tlic case of the Australian figures, Dr Neale said that, according to the Commonwealth year bo-ok, Australia actualv imported m re from Britu .u than she sent here.
