MOTOR DIUVEU ACQUITTED MA ST EICON TRAGEDY JURY'S LONG RETIREMENT After ;i, retirement of close oin, four hours a. Supreme Court jury yesterday acquitted James Thomas liuther ford, motor-driver, of Minster ton, on eh urges of manslaughter and HOgli" gent driving, thereby causing death. Tho verdict of not guilty applied ;t<> both counts. The accused was discharged. His Honour Mr Justice Heed was on the Dench. The charges arose out of it lev elcrossing tacwijdJont. a t the Dlefnall Street crossing. Master-ton., on April 9 last, when a motor-lorry, driven by II u tiler ford, which had been converted into a. bus, was struck by a norlfy-hjund train. As a result one of tho passengers, 1‘ rank M.uirhead Gillespie, was killed. In his address to the jury the Crowe Prosecutor, criticising the evidence for the acc-r 'd,. suggested that the defence that ltuthere,rd mistook the ifjt re of light s up the track for those of the train was an afterthought .
