Wrllington, July 28. • The complaints -which have bean I levelled against the quality of some •samples of New Zealand honey may not be heard in th e luture. Prafcssor T. .H. .EasLcvfield, Director of Cawtirron Institute, reported to the annual conference of tlio National Bee-keepers' Association of New Zealand to-day that experiments bad been eairied oiq at the institute i.u treating inferior honey in order tr remove colour and unpleasant flavour. A series op experiments, lie said had Leon carried out in the laboratories of the ’in-tituu* by ALr Fitzgerald, of .Canterbury College, in lt)31. It iva s found, said Professor Easterfichi, that manuka homey procured Ideally and pennyroyal and birch honey, which the association liacl sfcured for the .institute sonic years ago, were amenable to, dililtioii with water, treatment with charcoal, filtration, and vacuum evaporation. On. a large scale, tile cost would be- -mall, but oh a small scale the re-si would be comparatively heavy, a s the Smallest plant which could Vie considered would probably need to stand idle for several months in the year. On Hie othjr hand, the same, plant could be used in connection with frnit-preserving or milk-sugar concern t ration in ,-umnicr. and could run for honey work during the winter, when Fttle fruit or milk was opining foriv a i d.
