FOUND IN THE SCRUB
MAORI GIRL OUT FOR A WEEK ATE TURNIPS AND KUMARAS (Per Uresa Association). Wliangarei, June 30. After spending n week in tho open cn the Whangaruru Peninsula. Rutli Stcrlig, a halfcaste Maori, was lomiil in an exhausted condition. She is nod report cl to he better. Last Tuesday, the girl, who had been staying with her sister, left heme, and it was though! she had gone to a neighbour's place. When she- did not return on the following day. her relatives organised a search party. The peninsula is covered with scrub and bush, and the search was fruitless. At the end of the week the police were informed, hut although they made two wide searches, the girl was not found. Late yesterday afternoon she was found in some scrub about 350 yards from the house. She had taken with her some sacks and a man’s overcoat, hut no food. She lived on turnips and kumaras.
