While North Island meetings have been, showing* big* decreases in total isator turnovers, figures in the j South Island have been much better, and the further south the smaller the decreases. It is just 50 years ago (says an exchange) since no less than 19 leading- of Dunedin, including the Mayor and two councillors, and Mr Fish, M.H.R., were charged at the Police Court on Saturday with g-etting - up sweeps at the recent races, and each were fined 4° s and costs. The hard track at Paeroa affected several of the horses racing at that meeting, among them being Gay Lap, who was unable to fulfil his engagements on the second day. \he j Lapidary gelding, who was very lame j after racing on the opening day, was not paid up for in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie, and it may be some time before he is seen out in public again. Antique put up a really good performance in the Ohinemuri Cup. He had 9.9 and wa s well back till the j straight was fairly entered upon. He then put in a great run, and only 1 failed to reach Puriri Park, to whom lie was conceding the best part of two stone, by half a length. He did not get the best of runs, and his effort stamps him as a really good horse.—Auckland Star.
Pangolin has improved greatly m jumping and staying ability during the last 12 months, judging by his display at Pac-roa. lie took his fences straightly, and never put a foot wrong throughout his two races. On both days he was always handy, and though he beat Spa Ipi ko on the first day, the latter reversed positions on the second. Pangolin should turn out a good steeplechase horse tine season.
