A spirit of compromise on the billion dollar Tax Bill led (lie Ways and Means Committee of the House to vote for removal of proposed levies on foods, clothing and prescribed medicines. The decision goes far toward heat' ing down all opposition to the 2.125 per cent. levy on manufactured afth close and eliminates about 150,000,' 000 dollars from the revenue of 505. 000,000 dollars expected from the levy under the original programme. The acting-chairman. Mr. Crisp, said that the committee must get something else to make up the difference.
