POLICE AND CIVIL CASES BUSINESS DONE TO-DAY Ur It. NT. Watson, X.M.. presided at the sitting of the S.M. Court today. CHARGES OF! THEFT Basil Tui Bishop, alias Stanley Lewis, aged “20, pleaded guilty to two charges: A Bulls, he did steal the sum of os in money and one blank cheque tire property of John Thicker; that, with intent to defraud by certain false pretence a valueless cheque for LA drawn on the Bank of New South Wales at Bulls, did obtain from H. A.. Gouda.!e the sum of LA in money. A ciharge prviousl.v preferred against accused, of making a ltd uttering a, false document, a cheque or £5, purporting it to be signed by ,T. Thicker was .withdrawn by the police Accused pleaded guilty to both charges and elected to he summarily cfealt with. Sergt. Cahill informed the Court that the offence took place on. March 3. Accused had committed the theft of the money and the cheque and had cashed the cheque witfi the Secretary of the Bulls Racing Club. At present the accused was licensed out from live "period did not expire till August next Bishop was undoubtedly abusing the leniency of the Court There were previous charges against the uncus-;. ■ed. There were (wo- alternatives, said the Magistrate - that accused he sent ‘back to Borstal for the remainder of his term, or that the term be extended. The Bench was inclined to agree with Sergt. Cahill that the latter course was preferable. Accused would be sent back to Borstal for a " period of fwet years from date.
SPEEDING MOTOR TSTS For driving his cor along Manchester street past the sahool at a rate faster than 15 miles an hour, A. B. Baker, who pleaded guilty, was fined 12s and 12 s costs. Ernest Duncan, whose speed was' slightly less than that rtf the previous case, was fined 10s and 12s costs. J. F. Nicholas, whose speed was stated to be 37 miles an hour was fined 20's and 10s costs. M. E Kherr.'ird. not- going f oi fast was lined 12s and 12s costs. Bryce Thomas, going faster thali Sherra.rd was fined los and 10s costs. Thomas was also fined 20s and 10s costs for driving without a, driver’s license. A lady motorist., was fined 10s and 10's costs. Whitehead, (Mr Cullinane) pleaded guilty to the charge of having listed a, motor lorry with a load exceeding the weight allowed on the Alain Drain road, Rangiotu in the Mana.watu County.
Witt. Horry, Traffic Inspector, stated it cost the Alana-watu County Council 0s a yard to deliver metal On this road, and defendant was continually using the road to cart timber. A fine of £5 was imposed with 10s costs. FINED FOR ASSAULT R. Hirst pleach'd guilty to the charge of having assaulted a young man named Naylor. Hirst informed the Bench he considered he had justification for his action. Sergt. Cahill, outlining the. circumstances, said Hirst had followed Naylor up the. street and without provocation had struck him so hard as to render him almost senseless. The Magistrate fined Hirst £4 and told him he must not take the law into his own hands, even if he" considered he had justification. Half of the fine, was (ordered "to be paid to Naylor.
