FOR THE UNEMPLOYED AN AUCKLAND ‘DISCUSSION (Per Press Association). Auckland, Feb. 13. A suggestion that support should be given to. the organisation of State and provincial lotteries to .augment the unemployment relief funds was made at a special meeting of the City Council. Air W.IL ATurray suggested that the Government should be requested to sanction a State lottery. Air IT.. B. Jenkins supported the idea. Mr J’. Blood worth said the problem of unemployment was a far 'greater thing* than could be settled bv the million or two million pounds (ha t would be raised by such a lottery. The Mayor, Afr G. \Y. Hutchison, warned the council that it would probably fall to lus lot to submit a general scheme to the local bodies and social organisations, f f any decision were made to support a .State lottery there would not be a chance of getting the. sjehemo adopted. Air E. J. Phelan moved: “That in addition to the means to he taken to supplement the funds of the committee, the committee support the organisation of State and provincial lotteries should such he subsequently legalised. ” There was strong opposition to the proposal on moral grounds by Messrs D. Donaldson. TF P. Burton, D. Henry and others, and the motion was defeated by a substantial majority.
