BY THE HON. J. G. COBBE Air L. J. Wild, President of -file Association., introduced, the Hon. J. G. Cobb©-at the show yesterday afternoon and Askod the Minister- to officially open the show. THE PRESIDENT SPEAKS Air Wild in the first place expressed his appreciation to- all the helpers who had -doiio so much to make the show a success. AVlieu he accepted the office of President he made up big mind that he would endeavour toconvince tlio people of tile town and district that the slio-w was net only a good thing for the' town but that if was verv important as ail agency for the improvement of the live dock. The success of the show proved that tliat tile people had largely responded, and had mail,- of the show a great -community success. Air Wild expressed Ids thanks to the Committee of the Association tor their loyal support and interest. He particularly thanked the ladies of tile several organisations who had undertake-’: the luncheon arrangemeats and had carried out their work with wonderful skill. The Bhow Association and tlio several women's organisation would benefit financially by this effort. Thanks were accorded Afr K. MoEw aii, who had provided and fitted up the amplifier and the ba-vtidcast.. "The Piesid'enti thanked Aliss Miller, the secretary, who was carrying out all the duties of this office for tile first time, and so far as he knew everything had worked exceedingly well, with no complaints. Afr E. H. Lange th* organiser, whose skill in that capacity was so well established in the town and dis trict. was also thanked very pro fuscly.

HON. J. G. COBBE The Hon. ,1. G. Cobbe said he had great pleasure iu being present, n-t tbe show. H e \va« particularly interested, as he Avag the first President of the A. aaid P. Assocnv tion. He was delighted to see the wonderful progress that had been made. This yeiy’s show had a record number of entries;. the total being 1937, this being *348 more tba.u last, year and 176 above the previous record. There wvis n good increase in the entries of cattle aJid pigs, and this was a. fine thing, far those two branches of ifirming were very important to the Feilding district. The greatest possible credit was du e to Mr AYild for the wonderful success of tho show. The speaker had expected a fall in the number of entries thi s year and not an increase. It was quite evident that the Asso-eiiiiic-’i had a live President, one who knew how to make things go. The exhibits all round were good in qua!ity. This district was noted lor its fa-fc lambs and fat sheep and the s how helped to keep up that name. The show said the Minister, was of the greatest possible benefit to tbps agricultural industry, as the competition made l’o-r tbe improvement of tlio stock. He remembered the first show they had, and while tho farmer s .at thVi.t time had rallied round and made up g°°d entries, the quality of tho exhibits at the first show could not compare with that at to-day’s show. This improvement was important, for it must not be forgotten that New Zealand, to hold iis own in the world’s markets must breed only tbe best. This wa g principally a primary producing country, -and while secondary indus* cries might play a, part in employing labour, primary industry must .retain its position as the chief industry of the Dominion. Referring to a secondary department of the show. Mi Cobbe said he had been struck by tbe magnificent exhibits in the cookery, needlework, and lionet lasses. Tho praised tlio exhibits there very highly. Deferring to the present economic condition of the country a.ud of tho world, the Minister sa.id the depres* i-ioii was only what was to be expected. After all groat wars there had been depressions, but they had passed away, and the present depression would pass away in a little while. Tlio people must look at the hright side iu. tho meantime and beep up their courage. He ■thought the depression might last a while yet, but it would pass awa v soon. In, conclusion, the Minister warmly congratulated all connected with tho show, which ho had pleasure in declaring officially open.
