HIS CAREER Ca-ual to -1 degree all Bert Hinkler’g flights have been spectacular. AA’ben in 1928 lie -or out on what was to be the br -1 definite record solo flight from England, to Australia hr, said unconcernedly : “I’m. off to visit tile folks in Bunilaberg.” The sleepy little town in Queensland was where he learnt his first aircraft leTong. before tile war. He joined tbe Naval Air Service in Britain in 1914, and saw much service on the Italian front and in Flanders, He was awarded the D.S.AI. and the Croix do Guerre. AA’hile in England after the war lie served with tlie mechanical staff of the Sopwith Company. and several of hi- inventions ancl introduction,* have been utilised by the Royal Air Ferre.
