The spatter of machine guns echoed across Xarraiigansett Bay early in tli e morning as coastguards and rum ruuiiers fought to a liuisli a battle which is believed to have resulted in th c . sinking of two liquor ships. The inhabitants of Newport were startled by tlie sound of of tiring, ni*l. liufrying down to the harbour, I hey l saw* tlie lighters manoeuvring for an hour in tlie inner harbour us they dashed about, tiring at random. The Dim runners finally dashed into tlie bay. Tlie gunfire doubled in intensity and then grew faiuter as the chase recede! from the harbour. An hour later tlie coastguards returned to the harbour and announced Unit two rum runners lmd been sunk. ’Pile coastguard vessel had the crews of both ruin rtinues on I nulls I. and tlie captured men were taken to New J,oit lon, Connecticut, for interrogation.
